The paradigm has changed.
Picture in your mind a 12-year-old kid. An ambitious 12-year-old boy… With a dream. A 12-year-old curious kid, with a freckled face and unkempt hair. An official nerd.
Nerd because this boy was interested mainly in computers and anything related to computers. This kid was so wrapped up in his vision of electronics and communication that, at that young age, his determination fueled him into making a messaging app, called a program back then. He was not poor, so he worked with a private tutor once a week, and even studied in an exclusive preparatory school.
Again, this boy was only 12.
His comprehension level was through the roof, as he excelled in literature and earned a diploma in classic literature. So he infused his love for literature and, you guessed it, computers and created a music software – all while he was still only in high school. But that’s not all. After he graduated high school, he enrolled at Harvard University. Talk about a kid with a dream.
He continued to climb to new heights on every endeavor he put his mind to. Even now as an adult – a young adult – he is internationally known for making a site that can that allow users to create their own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other users. By the end of 2004, this site had 1 million users. Sound familiar?
So, who was this kid with a dream? I’ll give you a hint – his first name starts with an M.
This kid’s name is Mark Zuckerberg, and who on the entire planet has not heard of his most renowned creation Facebook? Well, if you know Facebook, you know Mark Zuckerberg. Not only the owner and CEO of Facebook, but he’s also the founder! And how old was he when he started the interest in his dream? Twelve.
THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN PARADIGM! THERE HAS BEEN A BREAK IN THE NORM!
Once upon a time, it was the older, more mature seasoned authors, entrepreneurs and influencers that dominated those roles and titles. But again, the paradigm has changed.
Now young boys and girls, young men and women are succeeding, flourishing and rising in the place of entrepreneurship. The older more seasoned successful people are swiftly becoming trainers, mentors and retirees, while the young people are learning all about the hustle – the grind – the boss and CEO life. After all, some of the highest trending hashtags on Instagram are all about young entrepreneurship.
Get ready to experience the rise of the young authors, entrepreneurs and influencers.
Let’s get started, shall we? Let’s start off with “Da Bomb Bath Fizzers”. You can go to retail stores and malls all over America, and find their unique bath bombs. They are an epic teenage “sisterpreneur” inspiration, but their success didn’t come easy.
Caroline and Isabel Bercaw started their business when they were only 10 and 11 years old. During the summer of 2011, their parents picked up $25 worth of ingredients to make homemade bath bombs as a science experiment. Little did their parents know that they were making a business investment that would turn into a multi-million dollar business.
Obsessed with the relaxing smells and vibrant colors of the bath bombs which bubble and fizz when dropped in hot water, Caroline and Isabel decided to make enough to sell at a local art fair near their home in Minneapolis. They borrowed around $350 from their mom, Kimberly, making sure to keep all receipts to pay her back. After three months of trial and error, they made about 150 bath bombs. When the art fair arrived, they sold their entire stock the first day.
That night they stayed up late to make as many more bath bombs as they could for the next day. But it wasn’t enough. They sold out of everything again. In those two days alone, Caroline and Isabel earned enough to pay their mom back and clear $350 in profits which they reinvested back into the business.
Today Kimberly and their dad, Benjamin, have quit their day jobs to run Da Bomb Fizzers, a company that they say sells 500,000 bath bombs a month. Each bath bomb has a surprise inside such as charms or coins and can be found at stores such as Target and Ulta.
The company employs more than 100 people, the Bercaw family says, and generates multimillion-dollar revenues annually. The family declined to provide detailed figures however.
Benjamin handles the finances and operations while Kimberly manages marketing and branding. Caroline and Isabel, now 15 and 16, are co-chief creative officers: They create and test new bath bomb recipes, update the company’s social media, and act as the public faces of the company.
Now, they’re a ripe old age of 16 and 17 years old, and they are a multi-million-dollar company.
NEXT UP – Anna Welsh. Her business, “little bags.BIG IMPACT”, is growing and succeeding rapidly. Anna is a 13-year-old entrepreneur and sewer, and is an epic inspiration.
Anna’s predilection for the arts began early. She took up sewing at the Narberth-based Handwork Studio at age 6 and has continued ever since, working her way from hand sewing to machine sewing and designing. Anna has made everything from stuffed animals to skirts, but what really struck her was a clutch design from a Handwork camp counselor. She created her first bags in the summer of 2015, before adding her own twist.
“The counselor gave me this really funky pattern, and so I made these three clutches for my mom, and that was how the whole clutch pattern started,” says Anna, who exudes quiet confidence.
Not long after, the Welshes took a trip to Detroit, and Anna’s mom had one of the bags in tow. As they shopped there, Cynthia kept receiving compliments on the clutch. “It was cool that people noticed it,” Anna said, who initially shrugged it off. “I just thought they were being nice.”
But something clicked, and soon Anna would be selected for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, where she began developing a business plan. “I knew it had to be something with sewing, and that’s when I knew the clutch bags would come about,” she said.
Throughout the eight-month program, Anna sat down with lawyers, marketers and mentors to help mold her plan. The program culminated with a Shark Tank-style presentation to a panel of investors. They ultimately named Anna the winner and awarded her nearly double what she asked for. “It was crazy because Anna had a sample of bags, and every woman there wanted to buy one,” recalled Cynthia.
“That’s when we knew this was a real idea and business,” added Evan.
Anna’s cute, practical bags have sold so successfully that she’s had to hire two part-time manufacturers to keep up with demand. As she looks to the future, she hopes to continue evolving. Ideas seem to be always percolating for her, from bags for men to laptop cases to crossbody bags.
While growth potential seems infinite, the Welshes are keeping things in perspective. “You’re tempted to sell as much as you can,” says Evan. “We’re trying to hold it back a little bit, so it’s enjoyable. If it’s meant to grow, it’ll happen, and we’ll be ready for it. It’s okay to take it slow.”
That’s something his daughter believes, too. “I don’t think we’ve talked about how far I want to take it,” says Anna. “Until it becomes not fun anymore. Until it’s something I have to do, not want to do.”
Anna and several other kidpreneurs are helping to prove that young, teenage girls and boys alike can succeed in business as real, legit, official entrepreneurs. You’re never too young if you have dreams.
